FAQs About the Adirondacks

GETTING TO THE SNOW GOOSE
Q: How do I get to Keene Valley?
A: Keene Valley is located in the High Peaks region of the Adirondacks, about 5 hours north of New York City. The closest airports are Albany International Airport (2 hours away) and Plattsburgh International Airport (1 hour away). While there is a Trailways bus stop in Keene Valley, most visitors drive, as having a car is essential for exploring the region. The main route is I-87 (the Northway) to Exit 30, then Route 73.
Q: Do I need a car while visiting?
A: Yes, a car is essential. While there are some services within walking distance in Keene Valley hamlet, The Snow Goose is 1.5 miles from town and the major hiking trails, attractions and other towns are spread out. Public transportation is extremely limited in this rural area. (An Uber request may not be answered for days!)
Q: What about winter driving?
A: In winter, it is customary for roads and parking lots to be snow covered. We recommend an all-wheel drive car with good all-season tires in case you need to drive during a snow event.

WEATHER & SEASONS
Q: What's the best time of year to visit?
A: Each season offers different experiences:

- Fall (September-October): Spectacular fall foliage, comfortable hiking weather, fewer crowds
- Winter (November-March): Perfect for skiing, snowshoeing, ice climbing with temperatures often below freezing
- Spring (April-May): Mud season, many trails are wet, but waterfalls are at peak flow
Q: What should I pack for different seasons?
A: For all seasons, bring layers as mountain weather can change quickly:
- Summer: Light hiking clothes, rain gear, warm layer, sun protection
- Fall: Warm layers, rain gear, hat/gloves
- Winter: Heavy winter coat, waterproof boots, multiple layers, winter accessories like ice cleats and snow shoes if hiking

HIKING INFORMATION
Q: Do I need permits for hiking?
A: While no hiking permits are required, the Adirondack Mountain Reserve does require parking reservations during peak season (May-October). Visit https://www.hikeamr.org for more information. Check the DEC website for current trail conditions and requirements.
Q: What should I know about hiking safety?
A: Essential tips:
- Check weather forecasts
- Start early
- Sign in at trail registers
- Carry bug spray and snacks even for short hikes
- Bring more water than you think you need
- Tell someone your plans
- Be prepared for no cell service
- Do NOT depend on your cell phone for maps or flashlight as the batteries drain quickly in the wilderness.
Q: What's the Leave No Trace policy?
A: The Adirondacks strictly follow Leave No Trace principles:
- Pack out what you pack in
- Stay on marked trails
- Proper waste disposal
- Respect wildlife
- Follow local regulations
Q: When is black fly season?
A: Typically the black fly “season” begins in late May and continues for 2-3 weeks. Usually by mid-June, the worst is over. Be prepared with black fly repellent and wear long sleeves and head nets if you’re hiking deep in the forest. Black flies are not bad here in the valley because the river is organically treated to kill the larvae.
Q: What wildlife will I see?
A: The most common wildlife spotted are fox, raccoon, squirrels, chipmunks, and birds. Watch for deer when driving at dusk. You may hear coyotes howling at night but they’re rarely seen. A few lucky guests have spotted moose, but they are rarely seen. Black bears are present although not commonly seen by hikers. Use a bear canister to store food if camping overnight.
