Five Reasons to Head for the Mountains of Keene Valley

As I typed that headline, the old Busch beer commercial from my childhood echoed in my ears. I smiled remembering how my brother and I belted out, “Time to head for the mountains … the mountains of …” At this point, our voices would trail off as we were most definitely not supposed to be singing about beer in our home! But one day, I overheard my very religious mother singing while she cooked. To my utter surprise, she finished the phrase!

Whether or not you like beer or singing jingles, it’s the time of year when the mountains begin calling to tired hearts. As John Muir put it, “Come to the mountains for here is rest.” And I might add, some wonderful local beers! (check out reason 4 below)

Here are five reasons to head for the Adirondack Mountains for your next getaway:

Mountains Galore

Did you know that the town of Keene is called the Home of the High Peaks? Twenty-five of the 46 highest peaks in New York fall within our town lines offering vistas and views for days! If you’re not up for a “high peak,” consider reading “The Other 54” – a trail guide to lower Adirondack mountains and if you just want a gentle walk in the woods, Amy has compiled a list of her favorites in her blog post When You Want a Simple Walk in The Woods.

Historical Landmarks

While the mountains get most of the attention, the Adirondacks are steeped in history. Journey through time by visiting Fort Ticonderoga – a historic treasure that spans centuries, defined a continent and helped forge a nation. Stop by John Brown’s Farm where you can tour the last home and burial site of the famed abolitionist. And of course, no visit would be complete without taking in the Olympic Center and Museum where the “Miracle on Ice” took place in 1980.

Stunning Waterways

If you love water, you’ll be in heaven surrounded by streams, waterfalls, rivers and lakes! Swimming, paddling, photographing or just sitting by the water will calm your soul. Make sure you don’t miss Deer Brook Falls (right behind the B&B), Roaring Brook Falls, the Cascade Lakes, and of course, Mirror Lake which beautifully reflects the charming shops of Lake Placid.

Brew-Tiful Beer And Wine

Ending your day’s adventure with a crisp cold beer is one of life’s great pleasures. Enjoy our local breweries like Lake Placid Pub and Brewery, Big Slide Brewery, and the Great Adirondack Brewing Company. Wine tastings are offered at the Boat Tasting Room on Main Street in Lake Placid. We’ve also recently added beer and wine to the menu at our restaurant, the Monday Tuesday Grill.
