“If there is magic on this planet, it is water.”
— Loren Eiseley
From rivers and lakes to waterfalls and swimming holes, the Adirondacks are a water lover’s dream! Nothing says summer quite like sticking your toes in a cool mountain stream, cruising a pristine lake, or watching the sunset from a kayak.
As you make your Adirondack summer vacation plans, be sure to include some watery adventures. In addition to the soothing effect water has on the mind and body, the negative ions generated by swiftly moving or crashing water (think waterfalls!) generate an increased flow of oxygen to the brain which makes you feel more alert and refreshed! People spend lots of money on cold plunging because of its many health benefits. Well … around here, you’ll find free cold plunges around every corner!
Here are some of our favorite local water adventures:
WATERFALLS – Let’s start with a visit to the beautiful Deer Brook Falls, which is located right behind The Snow Goose. A 40-minute hike will bring you to its base, where you can enjoy a packed lunch or continue your hike to the summit of Snow Mountain. Other popular waterfalls are located just off the road – Roaring Brook Falls, Hulls Falls, and Split Rock Falls. The more ambitious water lovers can tackle the 10-mile “waterfall loop” in St Huberts which features multiple large and small falls.
AUSABLE RIVER – Guests to The Snow Goose enjoy access to a privately owned swimming hole – just ask your hosts for details! The Ausable River offers numerous picnic spots along its banks as well as world-class fly fishing and “swimming on the rocks” at the famous Jay Covered Bridge.
PONDS – These small, serene bodies of water are perfect for a short swim or an afternoon with a book. Chapel Pond is only a two minute drive from The Snow Goose and a popular spot for rock climbing. An easy 15 minute hike takes you to Round Pond – only a half mile off Route 73 but with the sense of being “in the middle of nowhere.” And another local favorite, the Beaver Pond near Keene Central School has a walking path around it complete with benches to sit awhile.
LAKES – The Cascade Lakes are two stunning lakes right on Route 73 (on the way to Lake Placid). Between the lakes is a lovely parking area where you can access the shores of both lakes. Perfect for a picnic lunch or a swim or paddle. Mirror Lake is located right in the village of Lake Placid. A paved sidewalk around the lake offers great views and a stroll through the shopping district where you can grab an ice cream cone or stop for a snack. Lake Placid is only accessible by boat (unless you know someone who owns lakeside property!) so we recommend renting a kayak or motorboat at Placid Boat Rentals.
AUSABLE CHASM – One of the oldest natural attractions in the United States, Ausable Chasm has something for everyone. Enjoy a tube or river raft ride through the chasm, hike the scenic trails at the top, or challenge yourself on the Adventure Trail featuring cable bridges that cross the roaring Ausable River.
PADDLING – There are countless paddling adventures to be found within a short drive of The Snow Goose. Bring your own kayaks or rent through St. Regis Outfitters or Adirondack Lakes and Trails. They also offer paddling guides if you’re new to this water sport. We have a paddling guidebook available for guests to use when planning their trips.
Perhaps our favorite water moment is spending a rainy afternoon laying in the hammock on the front porch of The Snow Goose. We promise it’s better than any meditation app you’ll find!
